For the little ones living in the private community of Fisher Island, most if not all of them will attend the Fisher Island Day School (FIDS). This school is located on the eastern side of the island and it students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin. It functions as an independent school comprised of a mere eighty students or so enrolled in Early Learning through Fifth Grade.

FIDS is a relatively new school comprising about an acre of land in regards to its campus. The school was founded over ten years ago by Robert and Lexie Potamkin. Because of their generous contributions as well as those of other donors, the school enjoys financial security. Interestingly, the school’s Board of Trustees is made up entirely of educators and parents in the greater Miami area.

The class sizes of FIDS are intentionally designed to be small so educators can better provide their students individualized attention. In fact, most classes have no more than twelve students. Strong emphasis is placed on teaching language skills including Spanish and perhaps most interestingly, Mandarin Chinese. There is also strict attention placed on hands-on learning in regards to subjects such as writing, mathematics, social studies, and more. There is a daily physical education program and the arts such as music are taught twice a week.
